Not to be a sap, but working with Todd has been an inspiration.  Todd is the type of writer that I really envy in that he can write (seemingly) effortlessly at any length on command – and, of course, always great, creative stuff.  Unfortunately, I know writing is one of those things that takes a lot of practice to get onto a higher level, but I’m hoping something has rubbed off!  I’ve been lucky to have an author slash educator of his caliber read and edit my work.

As it turned out, one of the last days of my internship happened to be one of the most exciting.  Unless you don’t think doing an interview with the rapper Havoc of Mobb Deep is exciting, in which case you’re insane.  Being a part of this upcoming Blacker Inkwells project (don’t worry, you’ll hear much more about this one soon) was one of the highlights of the past six weeks for me.  Naturally, I was nervous meeting a celebrity, or as they say “rap royalty,” but the whole situation was really low-key.  To have listened to his own music, played on his own speakers, and hear his personal thoughts on it was fascinating…an experience so unique that I’ll probably never do anything like it again.

Suffice to say that I am very grateful for this fantastic opportunity at a behind the scenes look of how a publishing company operates.  Even some of the things I neglected to mention in this and prior Journals, like the business meetings I attended and the skills I’ve picked along the way (writing press releases, formatting wordpress, etc.), will serve me well in the future.  It’s amazing to know that Todd and the Blacker Inkwells community is looking out for me.  And if the work I’ve done has sped up Blacker Inkwells’ rise to the top even a little bit, well, that’s something I can be happy about.

Last Saturday I was up early to check out the Harlem Book Fair with Todd.  This is an important event for Blacker Inkwells since it shares a similar goal with the Book Fair: promoting African-American literature.  Although I live near Harlem, it was the first time I had been to the Fair, which attracts thousands of authors, publishers and buyers annually.

On a day hot enough for some Fahrenheit 451 action, three rows of plastic tables lined the blocked off street.  Authors who had reserved space had been there setting up since nine, and by the time we arrived it was already a bustling scene.  It reminded me of the street Fairs I am used to seeing in my neighborhood; except instead of stands selling anything from gyros to plants to socks, it was only for books and far more condensed.

The atmosphere there was surprisingly intense.  With sellers constantly vying for our attention, we couldn’t walk a few steps before being passed a flier or called over to a table.  This certainly wasn’t my typical book-buying experience.  Never once had an author personally tempted me to a nearby aisle in a Barnes and Noble.  Getting this kind of close attention from those involved with the making of the book was exciting and definitely worthwhile.

With the weak economy as the greatest factor, this year’s Fair was slower than past ones, according to Todd.  A fast year, I’m assuming, then is something more resembling the running of the bulls.

My reaction to the Fair was split: part inspiration, part intimidation.  As someone who loves reading and writing it’s easy to be moved by sharing a city block with so many who share these passions.  It was motivating from the standpoint of someone wanting to make a career out of writing to walk through and take it all in.  After all, here was example after example of people who completed the arduous process of publishing, whether by writing or working behind the scenes, all neatly laid out in front of me in rows.

Intimidation also played a role in my day due to the sheer size and social significance of the event.   To give you a sense of what I mean, there were chartered buses from as far as Florida that came just for the Fair (literally, we saw Greyhounds parked out front).  Then there was the tenacity of some of the sellers.  But then again you have to keep in mind how much these writers have out on the line – selling their work is also selling who they are or what they believe.

Getting a first-hand tour of the event also got me excited for next year, when Blacker Inkwells will be back with a vengeance.  Without giving anything away right now, let me just say you won’t want to miss it.

One of my first ongoing projects of the summer is beginning to digitize Blacker Inkwells music archive for use on various mixtapes or soundtracks related to his writing. Therefore, the first few days on the job were spent learning my way around a turntable and the computer program Audacity.  Considering I had never really handled vinyl before, let alone actually played it, just putting it on, cleaning it, letting it spin and pressing record seemed risky.  Fortunately, the required skill set doesn’t exceed that.  Although I’m a beginner at the art of DJing (rather, what’s below beginner? Novice?  What’s below novice?), I have to admit that simply adjusting the volume dials is a cool feeling.  Needless to say, I have a newfound respect for DJs everywhere.

Hip-Hop is one of the many interests Todd and I have in common.  While I’d like to consider myself reasonably well-versed in the genre, my knowledge does not go beyond the classics and some of the better-known underground artists.  But this is little help to me considering that the majority of Blacker Inkwell’s archive is from the late ‘70s into 2000 – outside my scope.  But it turns out to be a great opportunity for me, however, because working with records primarily from the founding years of hip-hop, listening to Todd’s collection has resembled a kind of history lesson.  There have been moments throughout listening to the records while they’re recording in which I’d catch something that sounded really familiar and have it curiously linger with me for a while.  Later, I began to realize these certain lines, or parts of a verse, that I recognized had been cut from older songs and used as the hook on a more recent track.  Although it may seem unoriginal, using parts of a song from over twenty years ago as inspiration for their own music is a true homage to hip-hop’s roots.  For example, I’ve heard of NWA’s infamous “F The Police,” but not Jay Dilla’s earlier version.

Therefore, the stuff I’m used to hearing now isn’t so different from the music Todd grew up on.  This method of recycling material comes full circle in the greater scheme because it links the music I know back to the tracks that established hip-hop in the first place.

Despite our common interests, it’s true that Todd and I are of different generations.  Growing up in the 2000s, as far as I know music comes from a box, aka an iPod.  How does it get there?  I don’t know.  But when you click the song, it plays.  Working with vinyl, however, has a whole different feel about it.  There is something about dropping the needle on the record and watching it spin that creates a much deeper connection to the music.  Not only is it a grittier experience than having the music pre-packaged for you, but it also feels more closely related to the production of the song.  The imperfections in the audio can always be removed on a computer, but hearing the little skips and pops makes me feel like I’m in the studio with the artist, he’s behind the glass and I’m in front of a huge soundboard just bobbing my head.  I never would have expected getting this sense of closeness to the music simply by counting the rings in the record, watching the waves bounce or feeling the record’s weight in my hands.

While some of the content of hip-hop (at least among the deeper, perhaps less commercial artists worth listening to – more Talib Kweli, less Lil Wayne) certainly remains throughout the years, it is a shame that the intimacy one feels with the music itself by handling vinyl has been replaced by the demand for convenience in the form of an iPod.

So as far as internships go, I’d say I’m one of the lucky ones.  While other kids my age are getting coffee and sending faxes, I’m reading, writing and listening to great music – can’t ask for much more than that.  Of course, sliding how I’m now an amateur DJ into conversations doesn’t hurt either.

What’s the word?!?!? So yes – it’s been a little second since I’ve been here, but as always, we have plans to keep the summer rollin’, as always. So here are the main updates that y’all definitely want to stay tuned for:

1 – Of course, we made an appearance at the Harlem Book Fair this year (Saturday, July 17^th, 2010 on West 135^th Street). While we didn’t do an author table, there were a few meetings were Todd Craig, blacker inkwells publishing CEO brokered a few major situations…stay tuned for that, because the announcement is going to be quite serious!!!

2 – blacker inkwells officially welcomes intern Scott Etkin. Scott will be here with us until the end of the summer, helping to push the ball along even faster!!! Watch out for updates to the blacker inkwells facebook page, as well as Scott’s weekly blogs which will start this week!!!

3 – Stay in tune with the “Special Treats” section on the site. We will be hitting you frequently with new special treats, free music downloads, updates on what’s hot and poppin’…you know – the usual blacker inkwells foundation scenario!!!

4 – Be on the lookout for the MAJOR announcements on the new blacker inkwells book projects. These three projects (two are books and the other is a book series) will definitely grab you, as the writers involved are known for their penwork! I’m not gonna spring the chickens just quite yet, but anticipate word before the end of the summer!!!

5 – Also be on the lookout for a few exclusives promos and events, including the “summer of student” promo, which will include a very special and limited edition run of tor’cha…more soon on that.

So again, good people, we are back at it!!! And as we move through the summer and towards the New Year,  you will definitely want to be in-tune with the unveiling of the blacker inkwells “end to 2010” movement…

So after the Saint George’s MLK Keynote, I spent a couple days up in Providence, RI – shouts to my man Leo up there…stay up homie. After a couple days visiting with my Rhode Isle fam, me and my man Rich (who flew up from DC to NJ to take the SG trip with me) skated back down to DC with me on Wednesday. That next morning, we skated down the HOV lane to get him to Howard, and then I took flight to get to the Sirius/XM Radio building to be in the flesh at “The New School” show with Charles D. Ellison. Me and Charles have been trying to make this “New School” segment happen since I met him at the Harlem Book Fair in 2008 – so I had to make sure that I made it down there, and not via telephone, but in person.

It was a great interview segment: we talked heavily about tor’cha and the blacker inkwells movement…and shouts to super-producer Pamela Kirkland, who made sure that the tor’cha soundtrack music led us into and out of the 1st segment of the tor’cha interview. Next, I was one of three roundtable panelists, alongside Al Butler (better known in Philly as Al B on WURD 900am), and Tim Johnson, Vice-Chair of the North Carolina Republican GOP. It was definitely cool to be in the building with such heavyweights, chiming in on the relief efforts in Haiti, the Massachusetts Senate race and Obama in his first year. And of course, you know the good people at the blacker inkwells foundation don’t let you down – check the link for the audio of “The New School” right here!!!

Afterwards, me and Charles hit up one of his favorite coffee spots in the DC area and we began to build on some upcoming writing projects he’s got in mind…when these things come to fruition, just remember that I told you here FIRST…before it blew up outta proportion. As always, shouts to Charles D. Ellison – dude is definitely one of the most positive brothers around and is really engaged in making sure we all elevate the consciousness while keeping it very grounded and connected to the daily struggles we all face…just wait til you see what the brother got it store…

After a lot of hard work (and mad late-nights), the blacker inkwells website is FINALLY re-designed!!! Shouts to my man Steve from Panasonic, who held me down with this one real serious. We worked endlessly at this to make sure it was right as rain! If you’ve been here before, you’ll definitely see the dramatic difference with the whole look and feel of the site. And if you’re here for the first time, well…welcome to the new hotness!!! The most important part (phase one) has been completed with my man Steve, who really did his thing! All that’s left now is phase two – wait til you see what my homegirl Kupi just blessed me with…soon come yo, soon come…

And the website was finished just in time for me to shoot up to Rhode Island and give an MLK Day Keynote Address at the old high school – Saint George’s. This two-day situation involved a book talk on Sunday night, followed by the Keynote Address on Monday morning.

Shouts to all the students of color at SG, as well as all the students who came thru and supported me for the book talk – to show a little alumni love, the St. George’s student community was the first to see the website before I posted this blog! And of course, check out the SG website, as the audio to the keynote address is posted, and footage from the book talk should be coming quite soon. Yeah, so there's a buzz in the air that I’m lovin' right about now, and it clicks so well with the holiday season...lemme break it down...

Of course, the launch party was crazy – to check out some of the pics, log into facebook, then just click over here to get the tor'cha launch party photo album...it should pop up real nice…and what you’ll see in the pics are people with the limited edition physical copies of “tor’cha mixtape v2.0: we back and you mad about it!?!?!” Now, did y’all really think I was gonna forget about you??? Huh??? Well, here’s what's bubblin’ off…

First off, people been askin’ me: “why ‘we back and you mad about it!?!?!’ as a title sun?” Well, lemme break it down real quick. There was a lot of love for “tor’cha”, and when the 1^st edition sold out, there were people who were mad in a good way – cuz they couldn’t get their copy right away…they were happily “mad about it”…so for all that “happy-mad” love, we back snitches!!! And then, as always, what would life be without the haters…you KNOW there was hate specifically because the 1^st edition sold out. It wasn’t supposed to happen, the odds were stacked against us, blahblahblah - you know how it goes…however, we're back!!! As a matter of fact, “we back and you MAD about it!?!?!” So haters: when you done kickin’ rocks, I got a front-row seat for you to the festivities…cuz it’s POPPIN’ right about now!!!

So here’s the science: shouts to my man BJ at Control Freaks Management – dude took this project and made it buzz…first thing we did was leaked the joint “Timeless Ageless” – Truck North on the rhymes and the mighty "capital H.avoc" on the beat…heatrock…of course, that song got a few things buzzing. Feel free to grab it right over here, cuz you KNOW I ain’t gonna leave y’all in the cold. Plus, this’ll save you the work of the google science, which’ll give you three pages worth of sites (including nahright, smoking section, xxl-mag, onsmash…)…when I woke up to that list, you know I was definitely open!!!

So that buzz rolled us right on into the second buzz, which was the release of the mixtape along with another special treat – “Somebody’s Gotta Do It” by Mobb Deep…you know I gotta keep it family all day!!! So you can get the Mobb joint here, too…

Early on, we were in the building – shouts to my dude Prophecy Da Monsta, who came thru real heavy all the way up from the Beantown to rock with tor’cha in the home of the World Series (yeah homie, you know you wasn’t gittin away with that one)!!! Mr.Len hit the people with the dope-freshness…straight underground joints from today that you wish you heard more of, coupled with that boom-bap-classic 90s ish. We was all in a corner, and literally, EVERY OTHER RECORD, we was like “WHOAAAA, Mr.Len’s KILLIN’ it!!!” . After Mr.Len’s set, Akalapse hit the 1s and 2s and killed it with the rare soul grooves; it was a continuous onslaught of the soul records that all our favorite hip-hop samples come from……and then some. I can’t front – I never really heard DJ Akalepse go in before, but it’s something you need to be in the building for, cuz dude became problem number 2 after Mr.Len. And just when it was packed and the party was poppin, my dude Ricky Lo Fang, aka King Vinyl, aka “The DJ that other idiots bite to win Best Nightlife Awards” (yeah sun, I said the ish!!!) – Rich Medina got on and destroyed it. And I’ve been to Rich’s parties a few times before and heard him do it, but of course I was much more focused on the music on this night. When Rich says he switches genres every three records, dude is NOT playin. Make a mental note: if you go to another club and hear this type of format, know they bitin’ my man Rich’s style…dude came thru like the subtle wrecking ball – anything that wasn’t completely torn down after Mr.Len and Akalepse got quietly bodied…man look, I’ll put it to you like this: when I got back in the crib, I was so open, I wanted to hit the 1200s myself!!! All y’all DJs know how real that is…

Then, just when you thought it couldn’t get any iller, Mr.Len hops on for another set, and starts rockin’ mid-late 80s and early 90s HOUSE music…oh yeah, CO-FLO Mr.Len banged out a crazy house set. And all the favorites: Hot Music, Robin S, M People, Frankie Knuckles (The Whistle Song drove the crowd to the next stratosphere), Dajae, Masters at Work…Len made all of us remember how dope it was to go out 10 years ago…for real. On the way out the door, I had to hit DJ Phillee Blunt with the “sun, you sure we out now??? Sun, he just put on ‘The 900 Number’…how you walk out on the 900 number sun???”

Meanwhile, apparently we was the ish of the whole night…Twitter was tweeted out with the word that the party at APT was on fiyah sumthin AWFUL!!! I also got word that Mr.Len’s set rang bells so tough, that a radio station had on a throwback set that sounded like Mr.Len’s set…hey, I’m just sayin what I heard, you know…
It was definitely a moment to remember, without question.

Extra shouts to No Mas – who had me laced up something real crazy with the “I’m the Straw That Stirs the Drink” hoodie, hat and the “Game Night” tee. Yes indeed, I was fresh, compliments of the No Mas foundation. Of course, shouts to Chris Isenberg, Donnell Alexander, and Andrew McIver, who all made sure that I was official!!! Shouts to all the people at APT, who showed nufin but love to me the whole night. And of course, shouts to the “blacker inkwells launch party think-tank”: Mr.Len (who has held the tor’cha movement down lovely for a minute), Rich Medina (whose energy and enthusiasm for this project has helped to step the blacker inkwells game up a few notches) and Akalepse (who showed extra love and support to the cause!). And of course, shouts to all y’all who came thru, especially Zuhirah, Furqan, Phillee Blunt, Jean Grae (oh yeah, Jean was in the building), Jessica Green (Mayles Cinema), Nandi and Sommer, D Smooth (UrbanSoul Music Group), my man Fly (Flytime Studios – Infamous all day), and any and everyone else I’m forgetting. It was a great night that found me surrounded by family, friends and good people who were excited to celebrate the release of the tor’cha 2nd edition with the new CD-ROM…

…oh yeah, did I mention everyone in the building got the limited edition pressing of the “tor’cha version 2.0 mixtape: ‘we back and you mad about it!?!?!’”, mixed by DJ Phillee Blunt of the Illvibe Collective and hosted by Philly’s own Reef the Lost Cauze? I already got word back from Rich that the mixtape’s knockin’ real bonkers, so that’s all I’ma say on that…but you’ll be able to catch that download at a blogger/blogspot near you in a second…and that second being Monday, Deceber 21st!!! Shouts to BJ Moore of Control Freaks Management, Phillee Blunt (who really put his foot in the mixtape’s a@@!), Reef the Lost Cauze and Dumhi for really comin’ thru on the hosting tip, and all the artists that have songs and drops on the mixtape…it couldn’t have gone down like this without y’all, word…
